Support Groups and Education

Arthritis support group: Joint Effort meets the first Tuesday of February, April, June, August, October and December, at 6 p.m. in in Mansfield Hospital's front lobby conference room. Call Rita Scheidt, R.N., staff educator, at 419-526-8125.

Asthma classes: A series of two classes meets at Mansfield Hospital. Class one is for more information about asthma, and class two covers asthma triggers Both classes are free and are held periodically, but registration is required. Call 419-526-8455.

Bereavement: "Concerned Friends," a support group for parents who have lost a child, meets the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Mansfield Hospital. Call Faith Proietti, bereavement chaplain, at 419-520-2392.

MedCentral also offers bereavement counseling by a licensed social worker for parents who have lost a child - to miscarriage, adoption, abortion, stillbirth or for any reason. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, call Karen Fisher, M.S.W., L.S.W., at 419-526-8642.

Blood pressure screening:

Health & Fitness Center - First Wednesday of each month 9- 11 a.m. and 5- 7 p.m.

Mansfield Hospital - Third Wednesday of each month 9 a.m. -noon.

Shelby Hospital - Second Friday of each month 9-11 a.m.

Blood sugar screenings, held in conjunction with blood pressure screenings:

Mansfield Hospital - Third Wednesday of February, May, August and November 9 a.m.-noon.

Shelby Hospital - Second Friday of January, April, July and October 9-11 a.m.

Body composition screenings in 2005 will be held August 18 and October 20 at the Health & Fitness Center 9-11 a.m. and 5-7 p.m.

Breastfeeding: See childbirth and breastfeeding class times for new and expecting parents.

Cancer support group: Meets the last Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Mansfield Hospital. Call Faith Proietti, bereavement chaplain, at 419-520-2392.

Cardiac support group: Mended Hearts meets the last Thursday of the month (except for December and July) at 7 p.m. at the MedCentral Health & Fitness Center. Call Cardiac Educator Kay Truax, R.N., M.S. at 419-526-8238.

Caregivers Lunch Group: For those caring for others who are ill, meets the second Thursday of the month at noon, Derrenberger’s Family Restaurant , 1402 Lexington Ave., Mansfield. Call the Rev. Faith Proietti at 419-520-2392.

Childbirth: See childbirth and breastfeeding class times for new and expecting parents.

Cholesterol screenings: The Health & Fitness Center will host sessions in 2006:

  • Cholesterol screenings (lipid profile) will be held 7-11 a.m. September 20. The cost is $18, and a 12-hour fast is recommended for optimal results.
  • Total cholesterol/blood glucose screenings will be held 7-11 a.m. November 15. The cost is $6, and a 12-hour fast is recommended for optimal results.

Diabetes, adult support group: Meets the last Tuesday of every other month at 6:45 p.m. at Mansfield Hospital. Meetings are scheduled for January, March, May, July, September and November. Call Cynthia S. Welch, R.N., B.S.N., diabetic educator, at 419-526-8541.

Diabetes, juvenile support group: Meets the third Monday of January, March, May, September and November at 7 p.m. in Mansfield Hospital. Call Donna Dillinger, R.N., B.S.N., diabetic educator, at 419-526-8923.

Diabetic education class: The series of four classes is held once monthly at Mansfield Hospital. Participation is by physician referral. Call Cynthia S. Welch, R.N., B.S.N., diabetic educator, at 419-526-8541.

Fibromyalgia support group: Joint Effort meets the first Tuesday of February, April, June, August, October and December, at 6 p.m. in in Mansfield Hospital's front lobby conference room. Call Rita Scheidt, R.N., staff educator, at 419-526-8125.

Grief social group: "Hungry Hearts" meets the last Tuesday of the month at noon at Fire Mountain Steakhouse, 994 N. Lexington Springmill Road, Ontario. Call Addie Olson at 419-520-2949.

Grief support group: Meets the second Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Mansfield Hospital chapel. Call Faith Proietti, bereavement chaplain, at 419-520-2392.

Lung disease: Pulmonary rehab/lung disease support group for people with lung disease and their families meets the third Wednesday of the month, February through December at 2 p.m. in the MedCentral Health & Fitness Center aerobics studio. Call Kathy Johnson, respiratory therapist, at 419-526-8455.

Mental illness: The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill support group meets the third Monday of the month from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Richland County Mental Health Board, 87 E. First St., Mansfield. Call Mary Kay Pierce at 419-522-6264.

Ostomy support group: Meets the fourth Monday of April, June, September and November at 7 p.m. in the Wound Care Center patient waiting room at Mansfield Hospital. Call Angela Eisaman, R.N., enterostomal therapist, at 419-526-8595.

Pulmonary rehab/lung disease support group for people with lung disease and their families meets the third Wednesday of the month, February through December at 2 p.m. in the MedCentral Health & Fitness Center aerobics studio. Call Kathy Johnson, respiratory therapist, at 419-526-8455.

Suicide support group for those who have lost someone to suicide meets the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Mansfield Hospital chapel. Call the Rev. Faith Proietti at 419-520-2392; or Angie Messner at 419-289-2862.
